MISSION DESCRIPTION |
42/7 | May 21, 1943 |
Wilhelmshaven, U/B |
Formed up with the rest of the flight and headed off to target. Over Target attacked and hit by Fw 190`s our new Bombadier was wounded but carried on his attack our Navigator was also hit at this time, We managed to survive the first wave and a second came in wounding both waist gunners. No Flak hits but bad weather over Target meant not a good delivery for Lt Dixons first mission. As soon as we turned for home in came the fighters again, Crew reports of some kind of flashes from the wings of the 109`s not the usual small gunfire flashes, these flew by and attacked elsewhere. Another wave of aircraft and a single 190 came at us from the rear our tail gunner hit this fighter and was reported flying away smoking by our ball gunner who also gave him a burst on his way home. No further attacks from fighters and we landed safe. Small amount of superficial damage to patch up so will be ready for next mission . after a poor show of gunnery skills today my crew are heading for the ranges after gun sight checks . GOONER took off and formed up with the 1101 st We never saw a fighter close enough all the way to target, Over Target hit by Flak on Port Wing but this didnt do enough to stop a good bomb run again by Lt Caldwell. As soon as we turned for home in came the fighters hitting nose section and starboard wing top turret hit one Me 110 on his second Pass and that was the last we saw of him no other fighters managed to hit us . Sadly though this fire killed our Bombadier and left us with out our Nose gun . Shortly after came another wave and these passed without hitting us our defensive fire must be improving even if there were no kills . Closer to home another two Me 110 attacked, top turret took out the first and the other flew by without hitting us and must have moved on to another target as we never saw it again. no further attacks and landed back at base safe , not much damage to patch up so will be ready for next mission as soon as Lt Dixon . Lee arrives for his new assignment. Lt Winfrey B |

GOONER took off and formed up as planned
Over target we were jumped by 4 190`s 2 were despatched with while the
others gave us a few bursts of fire both hitting
the radio room equipment was damaged but missed the radio op in his firing position we were then hit by Flak which did superficial damage to both wings
.
Bombs on Target and away.
Attacked on way out twice hitting tail position and nose then
by a vertical dive and the radio op kept his nerve as top gunner missed him and sent him smoking away . Landed Safe ready for next mission

Took off and formed up as usual and on time. Just short of Target Sgt Jablonski reported 110`s low but they must have found an easier target as they flew right past without hitting us and not returning Smooth bomb run on Target Hope we hit them hard. After dropping our eggs we were jumped by a bunch of five 109`s top turret took out one as they came in guns blazing, luckily no serious damage inflicted, only two returned to carry on the attack when Lt Caldwell just taking up position in the nose took one out. Suddenly a couple of 190`s came in at three and ten, Lt Land informed Sgt Pfister one was heading his way over the intercom while Sgt Dequzman took the one out at three and we took fire craft seemed to be handling fine no so serious hits , Sgt Pfister our tail gunner took out the second 190 as he flew past. Sgt Dequzman called a warning of an attack from a 109 directly above guns blazing as he dived down on us and then turned away. That was the last fighter we saw, keeping alert all the way back to base. Landed safe no serious damage on visual check Lt Winfrey |

"GOONER" Took and joined formation on time, as approaching target area saw off the attack of 3 x 109`s , one breaking away smoking after Sgt Monson .J gave it a good burst unfortunately at the same time he received a Serious Wound and took no further part in the raid. Shortly after 2Lt Land .W gave a lone 109 a long burst which promptly broke up and spiralled to earth , no chute seen. The ship shook as we received a direct hit from Flak in the nose compartment which took out Lt Rosen .T which meant no luck on dropping our eggs on target , we kept in formation and returned to base without further action , the fighter cover certainly kept the Lufftwaffe at bay today. |
