MISSION DESCRIPTION | |||
35/9 | Apr. 17, 1943 | Bremen, FW Factory |
We did not
have a good on this mission. When we were over the English coast line
heading
out over the North Sea, the power in the top turret went out. Sgt
Perlman
assured me that it was nothing serious that the guns were still
operable. That
was good to know when we were attacked by two fighter waves when we
neared
Germany. A
190 and
three 109s attacked from the front. LT Winston hit an damaged one of
109s. A
good first mission for him. Sgt Perlman was mistaken about his machine
guns
when he tried to fire. He couldn’t traverse the turret and
track the fighter so
he never had a chance to fire at it. We were lucky this time. None of
them hit
us. Sgt
Perlman
fired at a 190 in the second wave but missed. A 190 at 3 high hit us
four
times, damaged the bomb controls. Sgt Perlman had to move to the bomb
bay to
release the bombs manually. Two
waves
attacked again over the target. In the first wave a green pilot hit us
from 9
high. When he attacked from the front LT damaged him seriously. He
managed to fire
before he disappeared and we were attacked by two 110s. Their aim was
off and
were then driven off by the formation. Flak
was
heavy and we got hit in the tail going in. Bomb Run was off target due
to the
damaged controls and the flak hits. We got hit by flak again after the
bomb
run. Two
waves
attacked again right after flak. A total of 5 109s with tow of them
hitting us.
The ball turret was knocked out in this attack. That
was
the last of enemy action we saw on this mission. It was a quiet ride
back to
Archbury. We couldn’t do anything about the ball turret and
was praying that
our landing gear wouldn’t act up. Landing
was
without any problems and we could get Sgt Martinez out safely. |
